Here are some thoughts considering wet weather conditions as I have just returned from a wet session. These are tips bearing in mind the goalkeepers were quite uncomfortable – I will update / upgrade this article at a later date.
Bring a rain jacket – keeping under garments dryer for longer and also allowing you to skid along the surface.
Have a towel to dry gloves – Better than ringing them out
Tighter gloves are better – Big gloves become cumbersome in wet conditions. Tighter gloves and an expectation to parry is what is needed.
Surgical gloves under GK gloves – Keep hands dry and warmer. Thin surgical gloves means you do not lose feel for the ball
Be aware of bounce – a Wet skidding ball picks up speed as it hits the ground
Good footwork needed for second barrier – Needed as ball can slip through hands
Use of the “K” technique – Skidding ball raising
Be ready and prepared for “Second Save” –
Have some spare clothes – Otherwise the journey home will be miserable
